清光緒十六年(1890年)舒藻《重修太和宮碑記》詳細記載了太和宮創建的歷史：“滇南苴蘭(昆明)會垣東關外，距城十五里許，有山鳴鳳，又俗名鸚鵡山。前明萬歷壬寅年(1620xx年)，道士徐正元叩請云南巡撫陳公用賓，會同黔國公沐公昌祚，右都督沐公睿，御使劉公會于是山之巔，仿照湖廣武當山七十二峰之中峰修筑紫禁城，冶銅為殿，鑄供真武祖師金身。名其宮曰‘太和’，亦仿照武當山中峰宮名也。其時并建三元、環翠二宮，所供圣神仙佛，各有專司，瞻拜者歷歷可溯。而其殿宇，概以‘太和宮’統之。其地左挹華山之秀，金馬騰輝;右臨昆海之濱，碧雞煥彩，洵為滇南一勝境也。鄉人稱之或曰金殿，或曰金頂，任其信口而出耳。”

鐘樓

金殿風景區后山建有三層三十六翼角二十九米高的鐘樓，三樓穹頂下，懸掛明永樂二十一年(1432)所鑄的大銅鐘，鐘高3.5米，口徑周長6.7米，重達14噸，為云南省最大的古鐘，此鐘原懸于昆明城南麗門面的宣化樓上，1953年拆城樓移至古幢公園，近又移至“金殿”公園。
